I HEART ME!

Heart attack is the leading cause of death for both men and women in this country. Usually, we don't begin to think about our own health until someone we know goes through a traumatic health experience or we experience it ourselves. The goal of Genuine Massage & Fitness is to bring awareness to our mental, physical, and spiritual health in order to become proactive in finding a sense of balance or homeostasis in our lives.

Homeostasis - The body's ability to maintain a stable equilibrium between processes that are dependent on each other.

By becoming aware, our knowledge or perception of why we need to create balance gives us purpose. Once we recognize the severity of injuries, illnesses, and conditions, we can acknowledge them, which leads to respecting the damage or tole it has on not just the person experiencing them but also the people's lives who are closely connected. This leads us to become proactive.

There are a variety of signs and symptoms that range from subtle to severe. Some of the most common and dependable signs are:

  • Chest pain (Angina pectoris). This is one of the few early warning signs and not everyone will have this symptom, but those who do should pay close attention. Pain may spread from the chest to the left shoulder, arm, neck, and jaw.

  • Light-headedness

  • Nausea

  • Sweating.

  • Shortness of breath with or without chest pain; unexplained nausea, anxiety, or weakness; fainting; palpations; and cold sweat.

  • Stomach and abdominal pain.

Fortunately, the survival rates for heart attacks are much higher today due to awareness, and early prevention measures like getting the person experiencing the heart attack to the hospital as soon as possible. If people ignore the early warning signs until symptoms have been present for many hours or even days instead of seeking the attention they need. The damage can be extensive and it will be at least 6 weeks before any lifestyle changes like exercising can even begin to be introduced into supporting a healthier lifestyle.

Massages are now used in some hospitals to help mitigate the pain, enhance cardiovascular and lymphatic functions, and utilize techniques like PMR (passive range of motion) to minimize stress on the heart and ensure the body's joints and muscles can function in a full range of motion. As well as reducing the anxiety that usually comes with heart disease surgeries. Once a person is recovered and has a medical clearance to receive a massage it should become a part of their health and wellness lifestyle along with regular exercise and healthy eating habits.

Just by taking a few minutes to read this, you have already taken a huge step in prevention. You have just planted a seed to work out and set aside to relax. Even if it was just for a few moments, it still has a huge impact on loving yourself.
